We are programmed and run by Singapore’s longest-established cultural film organisation. We source and screen quality movies from all over the world,
and warmly welcome collaboration with independent distributors as well as direct dealings with filmmakers.
We aim for SFS Somerset to be film-focused, friendly, and fuss-free. We work fast in decision-making and customer responsiveness. Chairman Kenneth Tan personally curates our weekly line-up.

A bold, genre-bending film, with an ever-evolving, haunting soundscape from Golden
Horse Award-winning composer Teo Wei Yong (A LAND IMAGINED). Fifty-year-old Jim
loses his high-flying job in status-conscious Singapore, but his ego and pride compel him
to hide this from his wife and daughter. Desperately clinging onto the material symbols of
his past success, he unlocks a hibernating malevolent force, with sinister roots in long-
buried secrets. The filmmakers set out to create a film that, in their own words, “defies
easy categorisation, slipping across boundaries, shifting between worlds … that would
repeatedly negotiate the tension between the uncanny and the everyday, with slow-
burning dread blending with the foundations of a dark fable”.

Deemed as one of the Top 10 Chinese-Language Films of 1980, THE FELLOW WHO REJECTED COLLEGE is adapted from a bestselling novel, which was once praised by renowned writer Sanmao as "Taiwan’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’." The film tells the story of a group of high- achieving senior high school students striving for academic excellence amidst intense competition, as they prepare for the challenging and highly aspirational university entrance examinations. A top student sends shock waves through his family and friends when he decides not to take them. Singapore Film Society Chairman Kenneth Tan loves this film so much that he has watched it a total of 59 times on the big screen. It is literally the movie that changed Kenneth’s life, instilling in him a deep sense of affiliation and affection for Cinema, and inspiring him to embark on his lifelong career in the industry.

Derrick Lui is the first Singaporean to direct a race car movie. OVERSTEER is a coming-of- age story of a young man who falls out with his father, and together with a trusted childhood friend, sets out to survive as car mechanics. Inadvertently, they enter the racing world. The film includes professional racers and drift masters -- Drift Princess, Ashley Wong, Kazuto Soon, and Fariqe Hairuman. As Lui wanted the car races to be as authentic as possible, no CG was used, making for an extremely challenging and dangerous project. OVERSTEER won the Best Feature Film and Best Director awards at the Vienna Independent Film Festival in 2025.

RESURRECTION is Bi Gan’s love letter to cinema and a meditation on the endurance of dreams amidst fading images. Unfolding in a series of dreams, the film is composed of six chapters that weave together key moments in 20th-century film and Chinese history. The narrative drifts ethereally yet inexorably towards a future where humanity has lost the ability to dream. With an ensemble cast spanning multiple timelines, Jackson Yee’s ever- morphing protagonist reincarnates across different eras, whilst a Miss Shu played by Shu Qi serves as the film’s narrator.

A recently widowed old man finds himself confronted with the bittersweet task of parting with his cherished old car as he prepares to migrate to another country. He reluctantly embarks on a journey that forces him to confront his past, his profound sense of loss, and his enduring love. “Beyond being a narrative about letting go, the film delves into the themes of ageing and caregiving …..
I strive to infuse moments of levity throughout the narrative, and hopefully deliver a cinematic experience that resonates with audiences on multiple emotional levels.”
